The Stade de la Beaujoire - Louis Fonteneau, Nantes’ main stadium, is located in the Nantes Erdre district, facing the exhibition center. Built in 1984, it is used by the Football Club de Nantes, which plays in Ligue 2, and offers fully seated accommodation. It replaced the former Stade Marcel-Saupin, deemed insufficient for FC Nantes. The project was initiated by Louis Fonteneau, who obtained the support of the French Football Federation to link its construction with the organization of the 1984 European Football Championship. Inaugurated in, it then hosted seated and standing spectators. La Beaujoire has hosted matches of Euro 84, as well as rugby and football matches, including a match of the French team against Belgium. Renovation work was carried out for the 1998 FIFA World Cup, and the stadium hosted matches of the 2007 Rugby World Cup. A project for a new stadium, “YelloPark,” was considered and then abandoned in, but renovation for the 2023 Rugby World Cup has been put back on the agenda.
