Inter Milan's search for defensive reinforcements has led the Nerazzurri back to a familiar name: Cristian Romero. However, while the Argentine World Cup winner remains one of Europe's most highly regarded centre-backs, Tottenham Hotspur have made it clear that any deal will come at a premium.
Recent reports from Italy and England suggest Inter have reopened discussions with Spurs as they look to strengthen the heart of their defence ahead of the new season. Tottenham's reported €50 million valuation has quickly emerged as the first major obstacle, making negotiations significantly more complicated for the Serie A side.
Tottenham Refuse to Lower Their Valuation
Although Romero has been linked with a move away from North London throughout the summer, Tottenham are under little pressure to sell. The Premier League club reportedly considers the 28-year-old one of its key defensive leaders and values him accordingly.
Discussions between the two clubs have reportedly included other names, with full-back Djed Spence also mentioned during preliminary contacts. Even so, Tottenham remain unwilling to reduce their asking price simply to facilitate a transfer.
Interest from other European clubs, including Barcelona , has only strengthened Spurs' negotiating position as they seek to retain one of their most experienced defenders.
Inter Face Financial Challenges
For Inter, Romero represents an ideal addition. His previous success in Serie A with Atalanta , combined with his aggressive style of defending, leadership qualities and experience at the highest level, make him a natural fit for Simone Inzaghi's tactical system.
However, the Nerazzurri must first solve a financial puzzle before making a concrete move. Reports indicate that Inter are carefully managing their transfer budget and may need to generate funds through player sales before submitting an official offer capable of matching Tottenham's demands.
Any eventual agreement could therefore require structured payments or alternative formulas to bridge the gap between the clubs' valuations.
The Lautaro Martínez Factor
Italian media have also highlighted Romero's close relationship with fellow Argentina international Lautaro Martinez, Inter's captain and one of the club's most influential figures.
While there is no evidence that Lautaro is directly involved in negotiations, the possibility of reuniting two key members of Argentina's national team has naturally fuelled speculation. Romero is understood to be open to returning to Italy should the right opportunity arise after establishing himself as one of Europe's elite central defenders.
Negotiations Still at an Early Stage
Despite growing interest, there is currently no indication that an agreement is close. Tottenham remain firm on their €50 million valuation, while Inter continue to evaluate the financial feasibility of the operation alongside other priorities in the transfer market.
Unless Inter create additional room in their budget or Spurs soften their position, talks are expected to continue cautiously over the coming weeks. For now, Romero remains a Tottenham player, but his future is likely to remain one of the most closely watched storylines of the summer transfer window.
